Adult Leadership

A Trained Leader is a Prepared Leader

Troop 474 and Scouting America strongly believe that every Scout deserves a trained leader. Investing in your training makes you more effective, more confident, and better equipped to deliver a quality program for the youth in our troop. All training for registered adult leaders is managed through your My Scouting account at www.scouting.org.

Required Training

Youth Protection Training is a joining requirement for all registered adults and must be retaken every two years. Beyond that, each leadership position has its own position-specific training requirements. Adult leaders who complete Youth Protection Training and their position-specific training are considered “trained” and eligible to wear the official Trained emblem on their uniform.

To find the courses required for your specific role, log in to my.scouting.org, select your position, and a personalized learning plan will be created for you.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS)

IOLS is a hands-on, overnight training course that prepares Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters with the outdoor skills needed to support a quality troop program. Completion of IOLS is required for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters to earn the Trained designation.

Wood Badge

Wood Badge is designed to meet the advanced leadership needs of all Scouters – particularly unit-level leaders such as Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, and Committee Members. Topics include team building, problem solving, communication, and conflict resolution – skills that can be taken directly back to the troop to help leaders guide youth in a dynamic Scouting program.

Leaders are encouraged to attend Wood Badge as early in their Scouting careers as they can, preferably within two years of becoming involved – but long-time Scouters benefit equally.
